Marienberg Cloister

High above Burgeis lies Marienberg, at 1340 meters.

The buildings are visible almost all over the upper Vinschgau valley. The origins of the abbey must be sought in the nearby little church of St. Stephen. In its foundations were found traces dating back to the sixth century, making it the oldest church in the Vinschgau valley.

The beginnings of Marienberg are to be found in Scuol, in the lower Engadin region. There is nothing left of this convent, which burned down in 1096. The monks searched for a new place to build their convent and found it above Burgeis, where the church of St. Stephen stands today. The first abbot came from Ottobeuren, as did some other monks. As the centuries passed the convent was built out and up and decorated with the most diverse works of art.

The Romanesque portal of the convent church is a remarkable work in marble and granite and so are the bronze handles, which according to tradition guaranteed a special privilege: if a fugitive succeeded in touching those handles, he or she had the right to receive sanctuary in the convent.
